How To Create Beautiful Lighting
With Festoon Lights
If you’d love to create beautiful ambient lighting in your outdoor area I’ll walk you through how to do it, and importantly what to avoid. Over the past 10 years, I’ve helped thousands of customers with their outdoor lighting.

The right type of lighting has a beautiful effect on an outdoor area, and that’s why I study lighting design and layout.
Festoon lights are mood lights, they create a relaxing ambience and chilled atmosphere in your outdoor space. However, not all festoon lights do this.
The Secret To Creating Beautiful Ambient Lighting
It is important to get the right brightness and the right colour light with your festoon lights.
Let me explain…
You don’t want your lights too bright, or too white.
That’s because over the years we’ve discovered Warm White 2220K gives you that beautiful ambient warm white glow. And you want festoon lights you can dim.
Put it this way…
If your lights are too bright, and the light colour is anything close to cool white, instead of creating an ambient warm white glow, you get a cold and sterile light that looks like an operating theatre.
Not a great look when you’re entertaining. (Might put your guest off too.)
That’s why all our bulbs are Warm White 2200K and dimmable.
The Layout Of For Your Festoon Lights Is Important
Because This Affects How Your Area Looks Lit Up
When customers send me their plan and pictures of the area they want to light, here’s some of the process I go through to work out the best layout.
This will give you some great ideas and important points to consider.
- First, I look at the size of the area they want festoon lights in, and I look at what’s around the area.
- I study the pictures of their outdoor area because every outdoor area has its own unique style and character, and I want the lighting design to flow into this.
- If a customer has marked on their plan a pattern they like, I look at this and see how it fits into the space, based on the size of the area, and what the outdoor area looks like.
- When I look at a customer’s plan and pictures I want to see where doors and windows lead onto the area, or is the area they want to light out in the open.
- I look at the pictures for any height issues, because if you hang your festoon lights too low, it makes the area feel cramped.
- Then I’ll work out a few different patterns the festoon lights could be hung in based on everything I’ve accessed.
- I want the lighting to flow through the outdoor area space. The pattern should suit the style and character of your outdoor area. The lights should never make your area feel boxed in. And the lights should never feel overbearing.

Often, I get customers who are after a unique festoon layout for their outdoor area.
And often, these unique layouts require me to cut and wire festoon lighting to suit the layout. That’s okay. I’m here to help.

What About Bulb Spacing Along The Festoon Cable
Should I Get 900mm or 500mm?
Let’s unpack this…
It comes down to the area you’re lighting, and what looks best in that area. At the end of the day, bulb spacing is a personal choice.
Here’s what you’ll want to consider:
In smaller outdoor areas the 500mm spacings can look clustered, and too much. With 500mm spacings, every 20m you’ve got 40 bulbs.
Compare that with the 900mm spacing festoon, every 20m you’ve got 22 bulbs. That’s 18 less bulbs.
Yes, festoon lighting is a feature, however, it should never feel overbearing, clustered, or dominate a space.
The 900mm socket spacings tends to flow through an outdoor area, and keeps that feeling of openness an outdoor area has.

Which Bulbs Should You Choose
With Your Festoon Lights?
What I’ve observed over the years is, the choice on bulbs for customers usually comes down to two things once they know warm white 2200K is the best light colour.
- The shape and style of the bulb
- The brightness of the bulb
Let me explain…
I understand if you haven’t seen the bulbs in real life, it’s hard to work out from pictures on a website just how bright the bulbs are.
I’ll help you with this.
I’ve seen my lights in hundreds of outdoor settings, and I personally install festoon lights on a regularly basis. So I have a solid idea how our bulbs look in outdoor areas of all different shapes and sizes.
Now I’ll run you through our 24V bulbs:
24V 1.2Watt G45 & S14 Bulbs:
At 120 lumens (lumens is what light brightness is measured in) these bulbs give off plenty of light, and 98% of customers get the dimmer so they can control the light level.
24V 2.4Watt A60 & ST64 Bulbs:
At 235 lumens, these bulbs give you plenty of light, and again, 98% or more of customers get the dimmer so they can control the light level.
Put it this way…
If you really like the shape and style of the 24V 1.2Watt Bulbs, there’s no need to be concerned that you won’t get enough light, because all our bulbs have been purposely designed to give you all the light you need. And importantly you can dim them.
So now it simply comes down to which shape and style of bulb you like best.
