The good news is…

You don’t need to pay an expensive lighting designer to transform your garden and outdoor entertaining area for you.

All you need is a couple of handy tips and some insider information into what does, and what doesn’t work with outdoor lighting.

Over the past 7 years, I’ve helped hundreds of customers with design and lighting for their garden and outdoor entertaining area.

And the big secret I share with my customers is… less is more when it comes to lighting.

See, the right lighting completely transforms your garden and outdoor entertaining area making it a beautiful place for you to relax and enjoy of an evening.

Right here on this page, I’m going to show you how you can create your own beautiful outdoor entertaining area.

How to Plan Your
Garden Lighting Scheme

Layer Your Lighting

Layering the lighting is a concept very few people know about, or understand how to do it correctly, yet it’s the secret ingredient to creating a beautiful outdoor space.

What’s layering the lighting?

When you layer the lighting, you put lights at different heights and levels, you’re not just putting lights overhead like most people do. This layered effect shows off your outdoor area in a unique and stunning way, you could never achieve with lights only placed overhead.

Here’s a few ways you can layer your lighting…

Lights go under bench seats to light the area under the seat and just out in front of the seat.

Lights go at the front of steps, this not only looks great it also highlights the step when it’s dark at night.

Lights shining down a fence or brick wall, or lights shining from the ground level up onto the fence or wall.

These are just a few ways you can layer you lights for beautiful effects.

Next thing you’ll need to consider is…

How To Choose The Best Light Colour For Your Outdoor Area

Choose the wrong light colour for your place and it looks like a Christmas cardigan. Horrible.

Colour wise, you’ve got a few choices…

Warm White, Cool White or RGB (Red, Green, Blue colour changing lights.)

Here’s what’s important to keep in mind…

Outdoor entertaining areas and gardens are relaxing places, its where we unwind and relax away from the stresses of life.

This means, you want lighting that adds to the relaxed feel and mood of your peaceful surroundings. If the lights are too bright, clustered and in your face, then the lights keep you wired and tense.

Let’s take a look at the different light colours…

warm white, cool white, and red/green/blue light

Warm White:  Is a softer ambient relaxing light and the colour that’s mostly used in gardens and outdoor entertaining areas.

Cool White: Is a brighter crisp white, think day light bright white. You might use a light this colour earlier in the night then turn it off.

RGB: Red, green, blue and usually makes other colours. Some people like to change the colour or they like the idea of many different colours.

The thing to remember with RGB lights is, use wisely, otherwise they can make your outdoor entertaining area look like a cheap Phuket hotel.

Depending on your outdoor area and garden, and considering the size and the general theme you’ve already got going, warm white and cool white work best.

So far, we’ve talked about layering your lights and choosing the right type of light output for your place.

Now let’s take a look at a few areas and spaces you can light and the products you’d use… so you can create your own beautiful lighting effect for your place.

Neon flex lighting is like strip lighting but it’s more robust, longer lasting and easier to work with.

You can get 12V or 24V low voltage strip and neon lighting, and because it’s low voltage you don’t need to be an electrician to install it.

If you purchase off a store like us, we have all the parts you’ll need it’s very easy for you to get the job done.

How To Light Your
Outdoor Entertaining Area

Your outdoor entertaining area is the centre piece, so you want to get the lighting spot on here.

The thing with outdoor entertaining areas is, you want to be able to control your lights, and by control them I mean…

You want to be able to dim them, this way you get the perfect amount of light for your place.

How To Light Gardens and Fences

Gardens and timber fences, or concrete and brick fences look great when the right lighting is used.

A nice timber fence with a light shining down it looks attractive of an evening.

Lights shinning onto your garden, plants or trees, brings the garden to life of an evening.

So what’s the easiest way to light gardens and fences? Garden spike lights.

A good garden spike light becomes more than just a spike light in the ground.

Here’s what I mean…

Our Fusion spike light is a spike light, however when you take the spike part off, you can screw the light base to a fence or wall. Now it’s a wall light shining down and highlighting your beautiful fence area.

You can use the spike light to light your garden or shine on walk ways…. you can even mount them in trees and turn the tree a night-time feature.

Because of the simple plug-and-play system with our garden spike lights, there is no cutting or wiring. You simply push together and do up the thread for a water-tight seal.
